Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Expeditions
Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Expeditions
Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Expeditions
ome join us as we climb, ski, ride, and explore Iceland's
most rugged and isolated mountains located in the beautiful
Hornstrandir Nature Reserve with the owners and crew of
theAurora, a 60 ft sailboat "base camp" once used for around-the-
world sailing expeditions. We will be anchoring the Aurora in a different spot every night as we ski and ride many mountains and ridges that have never been skied before. The Aurora will act as our floating base camp as we ski and ride from fjord to fjord, moving along with us. We will be spending roughly 6-8 hours a day in the mountains and those that want shorter days may ski down to the boat if they choose. There will also be kayaks on board for those that wish to spend some time sea kayaking with the local wildlife. Some of the local wildlife highlights that we may encounter include: arctic fox and numerous bird species such as puffins, fulmars, guillemots, kittiwakes, and razerbills. These fjords even contain the last few remaining pairs of White Tailed Sea Eagles
on the planet. In addition there are a wide variety of seal and whale
species that swim these fjords. Come learn and manage the ropes of
a 60ft sailboat, ski and ride remote fjordlands from summit to the sea, and catch the tail end of the Aurora Borealis this spring with Powder Lines!

ample Itinerary:
Day 1 - Monday
We set sail from Isafjordur at 19:00. We sail to Hesteyri in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Once anchored we explore the area by Zodiac. Highlights will include an old whaling station that is now an abandoned settlement. We may have an opportunity for a short midnight ski/ride.
Day 2 - Tuesday
We review safety and avalanche search and rescue procedures. We
climb and ski/ride the mountains around Hesteyri. Along the way
we are treated to views across multiple mountain tops and into the
northern coves of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.
Day 3 - Wednesday
We ski/ride from Hesteyrarfjordur to the "Fjord with no Fish,"
Veidileysufjordur. The steep slopes into Veidileysufjordur offers many
great powder lines to end the day with.
Day 4 - Thursday
We ski and ride to "Lagoon Fjord," Lonafjordur. Dozens of
unexplored slopes and couloirs will greet us as we climb and
ski other additional mountains in the area before heading
back to the Aurora at the end of the day. We may even have
opportunity to catch some Arctic Char for dinner.
Day 5 - Friday
We ski and ride to "Raven Fjord," Hrafnfjordur. The steep
and high mountains of Raven Fjord offer fantastic ski and
ride possibilities for those seeking more complex terrain.
One of the highest climbs of the day will take place, up to
1200 metres of climbing on one peak. Raven Fjord offers some of the best shoreline for mussel picking in the country. We enjoy great Icelandic food and fresh picked mussels at the end of our day!
Day 6 - Saturday
We finish up the trip with a short morning ski and ride and then
sail back to Isafjordur. We arrive around 16:00 in the afternoon.
You may be able to catch the last flight from Isafjordur on this
day but it is recommended to fly out the next day in order to
explore the local town and region.
