mission
reality/concerns
Backcountry riding and snowboard mountaineering provide many benefits and thrills that ski resorts don't offer. However, by being in such areas and not within the comfort of a ski area's boundaries, many new risks and hazards are inherited. Snowboard mountaineering is extremely dangerous. Many expeditions featured on PowderLines.Com will come with their own list of serious concerns and hazards which in the worse case scenario can result in injury or death.
Such hazards include:
Avalanches
Falls
Crevasses
Cornices
Hypothermia
High Altitude Sickness
Other
Sean and his team are trained and certified in such hazards in order to help provide them with extra safety and protection while in the backcountry. They will make every appropriate decision to help protect themselves from such hazards.
medical
In 2004, Sean Busby was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that can quickly be fatal without proper and intensive management. Commonly confused with type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is strictly an autoimmune disease that is not caused by lifestyle choices or obesity.
Most of the Powder Lines expeditions will take Sean and his team into vast wilderness environments, where they may be days away from the nearest help or rescue. It is vital that Sean remains in top control of managing his condition in order to keep both himself and his team safe. Through years of intensive and successful management, Sean is ready for such challenges.
As a current role model in the diabetic community, for both type 1's and type 2's, Sean hopes to inspire diabetics around the world by showing them that diabetes doesn't need to slow you down or restrict you from accomplishing your goals - even if that is from the end of the earth - Antarctica!
